Solar Heating - How does it work?

Return to Solar Heating Main Page

Hydronic Solar Systems are designed for:
  • Domestic Hot Water
  • Space Heating
  • Pool Heating
A Hydronic Solar System can provide heat for a domestic hot water, hydronic heating or pool heating. In some cases the solar system may interface with all three. It all depends on what you need for your house.

So let's look at Domestic Hot Water Only
You can achive close to 100% of your domestic needs with the proper amount of panels (generally 2 or 3 Solar Panels) and sufficent water storage. However, the actual savings will generally be from 70% to 90%. So you will need to have a backup heater to generate hot water when there is insufficient solar energy.

You can use:
  • Electric Storage Hot Water Tank
  • Gas Storage Hot Water Tank
  • Electric Tankless Water Heater
  • Gas Tankless Water Heater
  • Gas Boiler
  • Propane Boiler
  • Electric Boiler
  • Wood / Pellet Boiler
So what is best for you? Well, this depends on what you currently have in your house. Of course, the proper backup heater to use depends on how often you need to use a backup heater. The more you use it - the more efficient your backup heater should be. And remember, we are only talking about domestic hot water here. This type of system will be the quickest payback, which can be as little as 4 years with your energy saving and goverment tax rebates.

So let's look at Domestic Hot Water and Space Heating

Solar for space heating may give you up to 30% of your heat. However, this number is based on 6 panels with a heat loss of about 25 Btu per square foot. So if you have a house that uses less Btu - then your percentage savings will be higher. If you have a house with more heat loss - your percentage savings will be lower. Ok? Well, now let's talk about the backup heater. Because this is where it really matters what you use.

You can use:
  • Gas Boiler - Colder Climate
  • Propane Boiler - Colder Climate
  • Electric Boiler - Colder Climate and Lower Electric Rates
  • Electric Storage Tank - Warmer Climate
  • Gas Storage Tank - Warmer Climate
  • Electric Tankless Water Heater - Warmer Climate or Lower Electric Rate
  • Gas Tankless Water Heater - Mild Climate
  • Wood / Pellet Boiler
If you live in a colder climate and you have Btu heat loss over 25 - then you should only consider an efficient backup heat system such as a high efficiency condensing boiler. If you live in a warmer climate or lower Heat Loss - then a Gas or Electric tankless may be a good fit or even a gas tank or electric tank. This all depends on your heat loss and how much solar energy you will get.

Confused? Don't Worry - we are here to help. All Solar and Heating systems are different - so contact one of solar specialist for a detailed system design for you residential or commercial location.
