This page is to give you info on heating systems and some of your options about systems and packages. Use this link to fill out our custom package form.

We provide assistance in setting PEX Radiant Floor Heat, Hydronic Baseboard Heat, Hydronic Radiators, Solar Assisted applications, and other types of heating application.

We work with our clients to keep our systems as simple as possible but will help with any type of system.
Packages are as individual as you are. Don't be lulled into believing that a pre-set package will work for you.

We will help you set up a heating system with tried and true methods that address efficiency, longevity, simplicity, and ease of maintenance.

First we need to discuss the way your house was framed and the construction methods used.
Older homes built before plywood floor sheathing are the trickiest to install PEX radiant heat in.
Windows, doors, insulation, skylights, and more, all need to be factored in for the proper design of the heating system.
Sometimes the heat load of an area is larger than radiant floor heating can comfortably provide and supplemental heat may be needed.

It is not recommended that you ask the floors to produce more than 25 BTU's per square foot, as this will bring the floor temperature above 85° in most applications.
Floor temperatures above 85° start to become uncomfortable and dangerous for people and wood furniture alike.
If there is a need for more than 25 BTU's per square foot or what your PEX system can supply, then you usually need to install a secondary heat source for the area.

This usually consists of baseboard heat, radiant panels, fan convectors, a wood stove, a small heat coil in the AC system or other various heat sources.

Choosing a Heat Source

Choosing the proper heat source and components needed for a radiant heat system can be tricky as there are many different ways to accomplish this task.

The size of the heat source depends on the load it is heating.
The size of the heating load is referred to as the heat loss.
The heat source must match the BTU load of the house or rooms to be heated, and the BTU requirements of the domestic hot water (is used).

How to find out what your heat loss/gain is?

Know what size your existing boiler (Heat Source) is. (This is not always accurate as boilers are often oversized and based on efficiency of the day. For example: a 50% efficient boiler from 1950 heating a 70,000 btu house would have to be sized at least 140,000 btu. But today, with our much higher efficient boilers - we could use a boiler at 90,000 or less.)
Add up the output of the radiators or baseboards in your house. (What? Well, if you have typical hydronic baseboard heat you could add up all the baseboards with fins and multiple this by 600 for normal baseboards or 800 for high-output baseboards. For cast-iron radiators, this is more difficult as there are hundreds of manufactures. But, local installers should be able help.) Once you have this number then you can assume this is the most btu you will need. But, only if this is enough to heat your house presently.

Tankless Water Heater as a Boiler

The Takagi T-K4 and the T-KJr2 are approved for heating.
They are also approved for use with pre-heated water such as solar systems.
A Takagi should the direct vent kit to be used for your heating system as it gets all its combustion air from outside.

We sell the Takagi T-K3 and the T-KJR direct vent water heaters that can do both domestic and hydronic or radiant heating.
They can be used as a stand-alone heat source with temperatures as high as 180° or with a tank. Be aware that you may not achieve a high temperature of 180° depending on the system.
A Brazed Plate heat Exchanger is used to isolate the heating from the domestic water sections of the system.
Most existing baseboard heating systems have been designed around a supply water temperature of 180°F. You need to know the BTU output of the radiators or air handler (water to air heat exchanger) at 140°.
You may have to install additional radiators to off set the difference in output of the radiators at a lower temperature.
Our web site has a layout of how to set up an a Takagi water heater for radiant heating and domestic hot water usage.
To do so you need a water storage tank.
Most people use an electric water heater as the tank (you don't hook it up to any electricity, just pump the hot water from the Takagi into it.)
The aquastat that comes on the tank can then be used for controlling the tanks temperature.
To run a closed loop off of this system you need to isolate the loop with a heat exchanger.

In some locations using a water heater like this is not allowed.
You must check with your local authorities.
We here at HouseNeeds, Inc. feel that open loop systems should be kept small and the cold water feed be run through the system to keep the water in the piping fresh all year long. But, we don't recommend open loop heating systems and if you use one of the indirect heating systems with a tank - we recommend that you use a Brazed Plate Heat Exchanger with 10 to 50 flat plates to isolate the heat system from your potable water.

Tank Type Water Heaters

We do not sell tank type heaters but will help you set up one as a heat source.
In order to use your hot water heater as a heat source you need to isolate the heating water from the domestic water or use potable grade PEX in the system.
We recommend using a water heater as a heat source only if the area being heated is small, as they tend to be very inefficient. A typical tank water heater has a thermal efficiency of less than 55%. Thus, for large areas it can be very expensive to heat with a tank water heater versus a boiler that runs from 85% to 95% efficiency.
In some locations using a water heater like this is not allowed.
You must check with your local authorities.
We here at HouseNeeds, Inc. feel that open loop systems should be used only for small heating loads.

Radiant Hydronic Panels and Radiators

Hydronic Radiant and Radiant Radiators require heated water pumped through them just like baseboards or radiators.

The radiators work very well with mono flow set ups and can use separate radiator mounted thermostat valves for each room if desired.
