Thinking about using a Takagi for Heat?
Save money when you buy a heating package!
|
Advantages:
- Costs less than a boiler
- 82% to 83% Efficient
- Very small profile 24" X 16"
|
Disadvantages:
- System must be assembled and is not ready to go out of the box
- BTU Output limited because of pump/heat exchanger sizing
- Efficiency can be less by 10 to 15% than a high efficiency boiler -

- System was designed to operate for lower frequency domestic water use
- Typical US homes use hot water 6-8 times a day or about 1 hour a day
- Boilers can run 5-6+ times an hour depending on heat load. Average
boiler runs about 14 hours a day during the winter.
- Very small copper heat exchanger that can lead to less efficiency

Takagi's are good heat sources for many applications especially where budget is the
primary concern. Many of the disadvantages can be easily overcome by paring the Takagi
with a Tank water heat.
Why a tank?
- Takagi's are super efficient and in many of today's heating applications the BTU loads
are relatively small. For example, on a warm fall Vermont day with a 30° night the Takagi
will run all day at its lowest firing point. This is the equivalent to driving your car in 1st
gear all day long. The solution is to use a tank to cause the Takagi to fully fire up and
burn up the condensate on ignition (similar to running your car through its gears).
- A Tank also acts as a buffer for the stress of cold water returning from your heating
system. A 40 gallon tank has significantly more mass and surface area than the relatively
small heat exchanger in a Takagi.
But Takagi recommends that I don't need a tank!
You are more than welcome to install it without one, we just would not let our friends or
family do this. We want you to be happy with the system you have for decades not years.
